Manchester City earned a record £176.2million for winning the Premier League title last season – a jump of 15 per cent from the previous campaign.

The figures, contained in the Premier League’s annual report, show how each of the 20 clubs is guaranteed at least £91.7m in earnings through the ‘equal share’ from UK and international broadcast deals, merit payments and central commercial pot.

The merit payments rise by increments of £1.7m for each league position and the total amount received is then dependent on how many of a team’s game are shown live on TV in the UK.

City, who won then league by five points from Arsenal last season, had 29 of their 38 games televised live – more than anyone else.

That pocketed them £25.3m in facility fees and when added to the highest merit payments in both the UK and international categories, City receive £176.2m in all.

This is a rise from £153m when they won the league title in 2021-22, thanks largely to a more lucrative international TV rights deals kicking in.

For the first time, the global deal eclipsed the UK deal with Sky Sports, TNT Sports and Amazon.

Arsenal came away with £172.2m, Manchester United £168.3m, Newcastle United £164.3m and Liverpool £162.9m.

The Premier League figures showed that Arsenal and Liverpool had 28 of their games televised live in the UK, compared to 27 Man United fixtures and 26 for both Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur.

The TV picks lead to some discrepancies in the earnings table – Tottenham, who finished eighth, gained £151.9m, more than the £149.7m for sixth-placed Brighton and the £148.3m for seventh-place Aston Villa.

Everton, whose 22 live TV games was more than other sides in the relegation battle, earned more money than Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest despite finishing below them.

Rock bottom Southampton went away with £103.6m, while Leeds in 19th earned £111.7m and 18th-place Leicester £114m.

The boosted international TV deal – which took the collective broadcast rights income above £10billion – meant every place in the table was worth an additional £1.4m last season compared to £368,000 the year before.

When the international merit prize is combined with the domestic one, it means each place in the table is now effectively worth £3.1m.
