Aston Villa are confident of signing Ross Barkley following Luton Town's relegation from the Premier League, talkSPORT understands.
Luton have never revealed how long Barkley's contract is, but it runs until at least the end of next season, although talkSPORT understands the Hatters are planning his departure.
barkley signed by the hatters as a free agent last summer after spells at Everton and Chelsea, as well as a season on loan at Villa.
The midfielder impressed greatly under Rob Edwards, but his efforts were not enough to keep them in the Premier League.
And he is set to return to a club he represented in the past, with Barkley joining Villa during the 2020/21 season on loan from Chelsea.
Barkley made 24 appearances for them during his season-long loan from Chelsea, scoring three goals and assisting one.
He then returned to the Blues for one final season before leaving by mutual consent and joining Ligue 1 side Nice ahead of his move to Luton.
A move to Villa would allow him to seal his return to the Premier League and present the possibility of playing more European football.
Unai Emery's team finished fourth and therefore qualified for the Champions League, returning the club to Europe's top club competition for the first time since 1983.
Barkley already has six Champions League appearances to his name, all of them for Chelsea from 2019 to 2021.
He could be one of the first new signings at Villa Park as they look to build on their success under Emery.
talkSPORT understands that they are also interested in Chelsea star Conor Gallagher before the summer transfer window.
The 24-year-old faces an uncertain future at the Blues as his current contract expires next year and he is yet to sign a new deal.
Gallagher was one of Chelsea's most influential players during the 2023/24 season, scoring seven goals and assisting nine more.
He played in all but one of their 51 games in all competitions, with Tottenham also linked with the midfielder.
