In an infamous moment after full-time, Klopp forced his players to shake hands and parade before the home fans in front of the Kop.
The gesture, intended to get fans on their side, was widely ridiculed by rivals as Liverpool were languishing in ninth place at the time.
Keane told Sky Sports: “(That game against) West Brom, they tied and he made them clap and hold hands at the end.
“I was at home wondering what is this guy doing?
“But he knew what he was doing. He's a smart cookie.”
Klopp quickly abandoned the team gesture, but later became known for his famous hugs that he usually distributes to his players.
Keane claimed he never wanted hugs from Ferguson during his playing days but refused to criticize Klopp for them.
“At the end of the season, if you win something (I'd have it), he said. “I wouldn't criticize it.
“Each one is different and that is his personality. That is what he has contributed to the football club. I will not be critical of that, far from it.”
“I think if you win something at the end of the season, a big hug for everyone, but week after week… That's his management style and it's obviously worked for him.”
“Maybe not many (Ferguson hugs), but he didn't want any,” Keane continued.
“We were there to do a job and win trophies and that's that coach's style.
“Things have changed. Now we see most of the coaches on the field every week. Times are changing.”
Keane was at Anfield for Liverpool's clash with Tottenham with Klopp on the bench for only three more games.
The Reds have seen their hopes of winning the Premier League in their final season dashed in recent weeks.
However, Keane shared his enormous respect for what Klopp has achieved in English football.
Keane said: “A huge respect for what he has done with the club, from his personality to his style of football. They are back to competing at the highest level. They have had disappointments like any other football club.”
