Ruben Amorim is the “great character” Erik ten Hag did not believe that Manchester United needed to fight for the Premier League title.

However, Red Devils legend Nicky Butt doesn't believe success will come overnight, and fans should expect it to take the Portuguese manager at least two years to build the team he needs.

The Red Devils lost their first match under new manager Amorim on Wednesday, going down 2-0 to old enemies Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

But Butt believes Amorm is more capable than his predecessor of getting the most out of the current team, comparing the Portuguese to his compatriot and former Man United manager Jose Mourinho.

Joining talkSPORT's White and Jordan show on Thursday, Butt said: “I think what you have to have at that football club is character.

“If you look at all the managers who came after Sir Alex (Ferguson), whether they failed or not, they are all people who can carry the club on their shoulders.

“(Louis) van Gaal and (José) Mourinho are great personalities, great characters.

“Unfortunately for me, I didn't think Ten Hag had that character. I thought he wasn't good at interviews, he wasn't great on TV, he looked like he knew what he was doing in a training camp, but he didn't transfer ( that) to a game.

“And I think this guy, Amorim, one thing I think he has is character.

“Time will tell if he has what it takes to get Man United back to the levels (they want) with the investment that will have to be made in the team.

“But it certainly has it. He has character, charisma and looks like he can carry the club on his shoulders, and that is the most important thing at Man United. I don't care what they say.

“Don't forget these coaches, these coaches are also going to look for coaches, so those below them also have to be the best coaches to train the players. And he has his own people that he brought.

“I think it was the right thing to do to get rid of (interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy) at that time also because (he's going to bring in) his own players, he won't have excuses, he won't have one looking over his shoulder, that's not his person. .

“He's got his own guys there and if he does well, I think he'll do well.”

Butt's former teammate, Red Devils icon Gary Neville, was furious with the performance of his former team against Arsenal, specifically Jurrien Timber's defense and William Saliba's goals in the home team's deadly corners.

And former midfielder Butt believes Man United will need at least two transfer windows to rebuild their squad and make them capable of competing for the league title.

“There's going to be a lot of pain,” continued Butt, who made 385 appearances for Man United between 1992 and 2004.

“There is going to be some pain to come, it will keep coming because he has to go watch the players and he has to play against them.

“Then everyone will say, 'He hasn't done anything in the last three seasons, why are you giving him a game?' Because this new kid has to come in, he has to give the guys a chance, he has to see what he has.

“And then he can go to the meeting and say, 'I don't want that player, pay his contracts, pay his contracts, get me that player, get me that player' and he can start building his own player.” .

“And it will be two seasons, it will be two years.

“It will be four transfer windows until we get to where we need to be and challenge (at) the top of the table.”

Man United are 11th in the Premier League table after a slow start to the campaign under Ten Hag.

Amorim has recorded one draw, two wins and one defeat in his first four games in charge in all competitions.
