Van Nistelrooy was at Carrington's training ground on Monday and the club announced his and Hake's appointment on Thursday.

Steve McClaren and Darren Fletcher remain part of Ten Hag's coaching staff, while Mitchell van der Gaag and Benni McCarthy have left the club.

Ten Hag said: “I am delighted that René and Ruud have agreed to join our project, bringing a wealth of experience, knowledge and new energy to the staff.

“It is a good time to renew the technical team and take advantage of the achievements of the last two years to advance to the next level.”

Meanwhile, Man United sporting director Dan Ashworth said: “Together with Erik, we are working to strengthen all areas of the men’s first team operations, and renewing the coaching staff is an important part of that.

“It is a particular pleasure to welcome Ruud back to the club where he enjoyed so much success as a player, and I know that he and René will help reinforce the winning mentality and high standards we strive for.”

United players who missed tournaments this summer, including Euro 2024 and the Copa America, have begun their return ahead of the first days of pre-season. That includes Marcus Rashford, who was left out of England's Euro 2024 squad.
