Sebastian Kehl offers update on Mats Hummels and Marco Reus’ expiring contracts

Borussia Dortmund duo Mats Hummels and Marco Reus both have contracts expiring at the end of the season. With no extension announced just yet, their future at the Westfalenstadion remains unclear.

When questioned if Kehl would like to announce a decision before the final game, or if discussions can continue afterwards, Kehl replied (h/t: RNBVB): “If we have something to report, we will. First of all, all discussions must have taken place and decisions need to be made, and then we will communicate it.”

It was reported last week that Hummels has now had a ‘change of heart’ and is in favour of extending his contract at Borussia Dortmund beyond the summer. There was also speculation that if the German defender was to see out his contract, then there was a possibility that Hummels may have retired at the end of the season.

Of course, there’s no official statement on Hummels’ Borussia Dortmund future, but it does appear that discussions between all parties are ongoing, with no decision made, as of yet.

Reus’ future meanwhile is a little more complicated. Although the German attacker has 14 goal contributions (seven goals and seven assists) in 35 games across all competitions for Borussia Dortmund this season, Reus has found himself in the starting lineup in just 22 of those games, seeing his playing time diminishing.

Perhaps because of that, it was reported last month that Borussia Dortmund are leaning towards not extending Reus’ contract beyond the summer.
