Nuri Şahin confirmed that Borussia Dortmund will be without Gio Reyna for their game against Heidenheim on Friday night after the USA international picked up an injury while on international duty.
“Unfortunately, Giovanni Reyna will be out because he was injured playing for the national team,” said Şahin in Wednesday’s press conference, before adding: “I found him extremely sad. Unfortunately, it will take a few weeks, then I hope that he can continue on a good path after that.”
Reyna, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, returned to Borussia Dortmund in the summer, but the player’s future was uncertain. The 21-year-old impressed in his ten minute cameo against Eintracht Frankfurt on the opening weekend, but didn’t feature against Werder Bremen.
As reported last week, Dortmund prevented Reyna from joining Bochum on loan in the summer. Şahin is clearly a fan of the American, while despite a contract until 2026, BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl rebuffed claims that Reyna wanted to leave the club, telling Ruhr Nachrichten in August: “I don’t hear that the player wants to leave.”
