Southampton are alarmingly on course to set a Premier League record that no team wants

Southampton are on course to set the Premier League's ultimate unwanted record.

This is because they are currently projected to finish the season with the lowest point count the league has ever seen.

The Saints have struggled to adapt to life in the top flight and have so far only managed to pick up six points from their 19 games.

In comparison, Southampton Fans will be reluctant to look at the fate of Derby County back in 2007/08.

The Rams are infamously remembered for being the worst team in Premier League history after picking up just 11 points during the campaign.

That team featured Robbie Savage as captain, Roy Carroll and top scorer Kenny Miller.

But despite their humble tally, they still had more points at this stage of the season than Southampton managed.

Halfway through the 2007/08 campaign, Billy Davies' side had seven points on the scoreboard, one more than Ivan Juric's side have achieved so far.

It means Southampton have a lot of work to do if they are to avoid that label of being the worst team in the Premier League.

The Saints gained promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs last season, beating Leeds United at Wembley Stadium to advance.

But adjusting to life on the fast track was difficult for Russell Martin, who won just one game in the top flight before being sacked as Saints manager earlier this month.

So far, Southampton have lost 15 of their 19 games and have drawn just three times in the process.

Much of their struggle has been their struggle in front of goal, with Southampton scoring just 12 goals in 19 games so far.

That figure is the lowest in the Premier League.

Southampton have also conceded 39 goals in the league this season, a figure only better than two teams, Leicester and Wolves, who have conceded 42 goals each.

Southampton's next game is a home clash against Brentford on Saturday 4 January.
