Aston Villa maintained their winning start to pre-season by seeing off Spartak Trnava in Slovakia on Saturday.

Leon Bailey provided a moment of quality to open the scoring after 38 minutes, handing the visitors a 1-0 half-time lead at the Anton Malatinsky Stadium.

After netting twice at Walsall in midweek, Morgan Rogers was on the scoresheet again when he turned home from close range on 53 minutes.

Rogers turned provider in the closing stages when he teed up Cameron Archer, who thrashed a shot past the goalkeeper at his near post.

Villa will now prepare to head off to the USA on tour, playing three games during their time Stateside.

Bailey wore the captain’s armband from the start, leading a side that contained a mix of summer signings, established first-teamers and Academy prospects.

Opponents Trnava, who finished third in their domestic league last season, are further ahead in their pre-season preparations and looked lively early on.

But Villa began to dominate the flow of the game as the half wore on, forging ahead when Bailey lit up a cagey first half on 38 minutes.

The Jamaican picked up the ball inside the box and shifted it onto his favoured left foot before curling an effort inside the far post.

There was little for Joe Gauci to do at the other end aside from a simple stop to deny Milan Corryn.

Unai Emery made 11 changes at the break and saw his team double their lead eight minutes after the restart.

Rogers and Kadan Young linked up on the edge of the box and after Young’s shot was saved, Rogers tapped home the rebound.

The home defenders were struggling to get near Villa’s goalscorer, and he came close to netting a second soon after following a mazy run.

Trnava made a raft of changes on the hour mark and twice drew saves from Robin Olsen, the second of which saw Jakub Power’s drive parried to safety.

Villa maintained their control on proceedings and wrapped things up with a third goal in the 89th minute when Archer fired past the ‘keeper at his near post.
