Steffen Baumgart now the favourite to becoming Union Berlin’s new head coach

Both Sky Germany and Bild report that former 1.FC Köln and Hamburg manager Steffen Baumgart is now the favourite to become Union Berlin’s new head coach.

Union fired Bo Svensson as their coach last week, but it was previously ruled out (by Bild), that Baumgart would take charge. He himself had also recently been fired by Hamburg.

However, things have now changed. Discussions between Baumgart and Union are already underway with them said to have already reached an advanced stage. Sebastian Bönig will also return to the club as an assistant coach having left the club in the summer.

Baumgart is a former Union player, having played for the team between 2002-4, making 64 appearances for the side. On top of this, his wife also worked at the club shop in Köpenick during Baumgart’s time at the club. The Rostock native is also said to own a flat nearby.

Union are currently 12th in the Bundesliga and are on a nine-game winless run heading into the winter break. It has previously been said that one of the reasons for Svensson’s sacking was the lack of game time handed to some players brought in in the summer.
