Steven Gerrard tells Curtis Jones he will be a 'top international star' as long as the Liverpool man does one thing
Steven Gerrard has praised the performances of Liverpool youth player Curtis Jones this season.
The midfielder previously played under the Reds legend at under-18 level before breaking into the first team.
He has since become a key part of Arne Slot's revolution at Anfield this season, as well as making his international debut.
Jones' success is no surprise to GerardHowever, he worked with him when he was 16 and 17 years old.
Under him, the local lad scored 16 goals and provided six assists in just 25 appearances for the under-18s during the 2017/18 season.
He would go on to make his first team debut the following campaign while still 17 years old.
Reflecting on Jones' achievements in his career, Gerrard said The times: “What he has achieved so far comes from him. He has achieved it.
“Most players from good academies will receive very good advice, very good guidance and very good support.
“There are a lot of really good people who will guide you, shape you and allow you to grow and go on the journey with them.
“Then you need a bit of luck and a good coach to continue your development.
“Curtis still has a lot to learn, a lot to evolve. I'm very excited to see how Arne Slot can take him to the next level. He's still young.
“Rafa (Benitez) had to grab me to take me to another level, and the exciting thing for me is that Arne looks like the man who can really take Curtis to the next level.
“If he can get him there, we will have a top international player on our hands.
“I'm very excited to see his next 18 months and beyond.”
Jones made his England debut earlier this month. score in a man of the match display against Greece.
A goal and four assists in 13 games followed for Liverpool already this quarter.
Those appearances have already taken him to 146 for the club two months before his 24th birthday.
