Teddy Sheringham has hinted that Sir Alex Ferguson would “shout out” the current Manchester United squad for their poor form.
The Premier League giants are sixth and 16 points behind leaders and rival Liverpool in the table after the final minute. 2-1 home defeat to Fulham last time.
United's success since Ferguson Leaving in 2013 is a far cry from what he achieved: 38 trophies won in 26 years at Old Trafford.
In addition to his management style, the legendary Scot was known for his no-nonsense attitude towards his players and that ultimately led to his period of dominance in English football.
Sheringham played under Ferguson for four years and told talkSPORT how he would react if United lowered standards like the current team has done.
“I don't like going back to the Fergie era because it's been so long, but he would yell at us if our form went down,” he told talkSPORT breakfast.
“It would be like, 'You have to understand what a privilege it is to play for Manchester United. There are millions of people around the world who would love to walk in your shoes. So go out and show the desire and that privilege to play for Manchester United.' United and the respect you have to have for wearing the shirt.”
“At the moment, it doesn't seem that way to me and upon entering this weekend's game against Man CityI think sometimes when you play in a Manchester derby, things can go well.
“But when you play City and they dictate the game for so long, I think they are going to wear Man United down, it could be a beating the way I see it.”
Sheringham also questioned the lack of leadership figures in United's current set-up and insisted Ferguson would have signed England's best talent.
“I've been saying this for a while, the problem with Manchester United for me is the leadership qualities. If you look at the players who were available in the summer, for me Harry Kane and Declan Rice… years ago under Fergie , they would have seized them.
“At least they would have been there for those type of players, this summer they weren't even there for the players and that's what worried me.
“Once players like Harry Kane and Declan Rice play professionally week in, week out, leading by example, other players follow.
“At the moment you have players at Manchester United, they are all looking after themselves. Instead of having Tony Adams in your team and making sure everyone is playing really well, don't worry about theirs.” performance, just making sure the team is doing well.
“There's no one on the team like that right now and it's like, 'Well, I'm doing my job,' that's where it all comes from.”
United face a big test against defending champions and rivals City on Sunday, and in the second leg at Old Trafford they lost 3-0.
