Aston Villa’s performance in the Premier League during the 2023/24 season provided plenty of highs.
A number of club records were broken or equalled as Unai Emery’s team marched to a fourth-place finish, playing some great football along the way.
And the numbers confirm what a great season it was for Villa. Here are ten of the best stats from a cracking campaign…
1. Aston Villa earned their highest Premier League finish since 1995/96 (4th), and as a result will become the 11th English side to feature in the UEFA Champions League.
2. Villa won 20 Premier League matches in 2023/24, our most in a season in the competition since 1992/93 (21) and most in a 38-game top-flight season since 1989/90 (21).
3. Aston Villa scored 76 goals in the Premier League in the 2023/24, our most in a single top-flight campaign since scoring 76 in 1976/77.
4. At Villa Park, Unai Emery’s team won 40 points in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign (W12 D4 L3), our most in a top-flight season since 1992/93 (44 points). Our tally of 48 home goals was our most in a top-flight campaign since 1976/77 (55).
5. Villa won two matches by 5+ goals (6-1 v Brighton and 5-0 v Sheffield United), the first time we’d had two wins by that margin or more in a top-flight campaign since 1961/62 (5-0 vs Blackpool, 8-3 v Leicester).
6. Villa picked up nine points in our four Premier League matches against the campaign’s top-two sides (Arsenal and Manchester City – W3 L1), five more than any other team managed. From April onwards those two sides won 17 out of 18 Premier League matches, the exception being a 2-0 win for Villa at Arsenal.
7. Only Cole Palmer (22 goals, 11 assists) was involved in more goals than Ollie Watkins (19 goals, 13 assists).
8. Watkins was the Premier League’s top assister this season with 13 assists – the only Villan to register as many in a single campaign was Ashley Young in 2007/08 (14).
9. Leon Bailey was involved in seven goals as a substitute in the Premier League (3 goals, 4 assists), the most of any player for any team.
10. Bailey was only the fifth player in Premier League history to both score three goals and assist three goals (4) as a substitute in a Premier League season, along with Vladimir Smicer (2001-02), Massimo Maccarone (2002-03), Duncan Ferguson (2004-05) and Daniel Sturridge (2008-09).
