The 5 reasons why Barcelona decided to go for Wojciech Szczesny over other alternatives
Barcelona have decided to pursue Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, offering him the chance to come out of retirement, to soften the impact of losing Marc-Andre ter Stegen to injury for at least most of the season. There are many reasons to pursue the retired Szczesny over the likes of Keylor Navas or other free agent goalkeepers.
The first reason to sign him is clear: Szczesny, 34, is experienced, and played more games for Juventus last season than his other options, Inaki Pena, Ander Astralaga and Diego Kochen, played for Barcelona combined . Marco also note his consistent performance, and the fact that he was still good for Poland at Euro 2024.
Another advantage is that Szczesny could play immediately in the Champions League, and give experience in the European competition, where the Blaugrana have seven more games in the league phase. If they wait until January, then any potential signing will only be available for the last two games.

It goes without saying that Szczesny, who is said to command a salary of around €3m plus bonuses, is a much cheaper option than signing another goalkeeper from another side in January. Finally, Szczesny should be able to adapt relatively quickly. He currently lives in Marbella with his family, is used to spending the summer in Spain, and his close friendship with Robert Lewandowski will help him settle in Barcelona.
The agreement has not yet been made, and it seems that Szczesny gave the Blaugrana a decision to make. It looks like he's only coming out of retirement if he wants to be number one in Barcelonawhich seems like a reasonable request from his point of view. However, it leaves Barcelona in an uncomfortable position with current first choice Inaki Pena.
