Sport Bild (via @iMiaSanMia) has reported on the TV rights fee of Europe’s major leagues as well as the distribution of this TV money in Germany itself.
From the data, the Bundesliga has the third most expensive TV rights deal in Europe’s top five leagues behind England and Spain. Nationally, the Bundesliga has the second most expensive TV deal worth €1225m behind the Premier League’s €2100m but ahead of Spain (€995m). However, it is internationally where the league lags behind.
For comparison, the Premier League’s international deal is worth €1840m while La Liga’s is worth €700m. The Bundesliga’s international rights are only worth €215m which is a lot close to Italy (€200m) and France (€160m). This shows that work needs to be done to increase the Bundesliga’s international presence.
The TV money is then distributed around the clubs in the league (via @iMiaSanMia), naturally, Bayern Munich received the most money this season €70.6m, followed by Borussia Dortmund (€68.3m), RB Leipzig (€66.1m), Bayer Leverkusen (€64.7m) and Freiburg (€63.9m). Some surprising figures are last season’s runners-up VfB Stuttgart only receiving €55.6m which is less than Wolfsburg, Hoffenheim and Union Berlin. The newly promoted sides, St.Pauli and Holstein Kiel receive €31.9m and €29.4m.
The gulf in finances between the Bundesliga and the Premier League can be seen with the fact that in 2023 (via Statista), bottom side Southampton received £94.1m (€111.7m in today’s conversion rate) from TV money, which is significantly more than Bayern.
