The €100 million reason why Barcelona will end interest in Nico Williams if he doesn't sign this summer

Barcelona loses hope to sign Nico Williams this summer. They have pushed hard to tempt him away from Athletic Club, but their expectation is that he will continue in Bilbao for at least one more season.

If this happens, Barcelona is expected to pull his interest on Williams at all, meaning they won't try to sign him next summer — or any other summer, for that matter. Supporters have considered this approach to be petulant, although there seems to be some reasoning behind it.

According to MD, Athletic will look to offer Williams a new contract if he decides to turn down a move away. His current release clause is €58m – which Barcelona could afford to pay – but would rise to €100m if he signed a new deal. If the 22-year-old agrees to this, the Catalans will go completely.

This seems to be the reason why Barcelona will no longer pursue Williams if he rejects them now. It makes sense, especially if Athletic Club they will refer to that clause going forward, as they did with the one of 58 million euros this summer.
