Former Tottenham star Jamie Bowden has been forced to retire from football at just 23 years old, the player has confirmed.
The former midfielder suffered a serious ankle injury two and a half years ago in 2022 from which he has not been able to recover.
As a result, his promising young career has come to an abrupt end.
Taking to social media, Bowden said: “Sadly my career as a football player has come to an end.
“On August 13, 2022, I suffered an ankle injury that would ultimately ruin the interesting playing career ahead of me.
“Firstly, I am grateful for being able to call myself a professional football player and score a professional goal while on loan at Oldham.
“I started kicking balls at a very young age and enjoyed every moment. It's a shame that I was never able to fulfill my potential on the field.
“Since then I have learned many new things.
“I have learned that mental health is real and how powerful it can be.
“My love for the game runs deep, football is in my DNA and my desire to help runs deep.
“God is with us at all times.
“I want to thank the people who have supported me during this difficult period and the people who helped me during my playing days.
“I look forward to seeing where this beautiful game takes me.”
Tottenham's academy then took to social media and wrote: “You will always be one of us, @jamiebowden17“.
Bowden joined Tottenham at the age of six and spent 15 years with Spurs before leaving the club in the summer of 2023.
During his time at the club, the midfielder was called up numerous times in the Europa League and Premier League matchday squad without appearing at senior level.
However, he made 25 appearances for Oldham Athletic during a loan in 2021/22.
In that time he scored a goal and accumulated five assists.
Since leaving Spurs, Bowden attempted to revive his playing career with trials at AFC Wimbledon and Deportivo La Coruña, however he was unable to secure a new contract.
