Former Brazil, Barcelona and Valencia striker Romario has come out of retirement at the ripe old age of 58.
Always idiosyncratic, Romario he retired in 2009, and has since taken up a career in politics, in which he was active the last time in 2021, approving then President Jair Bolsonaro, and now criticizing President Lula da Silva.
He was registered by America in Rio de Janeiro to play in the Serie A2 Campeonato de Carioca, the second level of the Rio state championship, which consists of 12 teams and starts on May 18. He said that he is not looking to compete in the championship, but rather to play for his favorite club and with his son, Romarinho.
“I am clear that it is not to compete in the championship, but to play some games with my favorite team, America. Also, I will fulfill another dream: to play with my son.
Romario is president of America, and he earns the minimum possible salary, as per Brandwhich you then donate back to the club.
Part of the famous Johan Cruyff Barcelona dream team, he played in Catalonia for two seasons, and also one more year in Valencia, winning the league with the first. He also won the World Cup and two Copa America with Brazil, scoring 55 times in 71 international caps.
