By contrast, if they had avoided punishment entirely, they would be 14th in the Premier League and far enough away from the relegation spots to be considered safe for another season.
With seven games remaining, Everton now face the fight of their lives to avoid being knocked down to the Championship.

Confirming the points deduction, a Premier League statement said: “An independent commission has awarded an immediate two-point deduction to Everton FC for breaches of the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the period ending the 2022/23 season.
“During a three-day hearing last month, the Independent Commission heard evidence and arguments from the club regarding a number of potential mitigating factors for the admitted breach of £16.6m, including the impact of its two successive PSR charges.
“Having done this, the Commission determined that the appropriate penalty was a two-point deduction, effective immediately.
“The independent Commission reaffirmed the principle that any breach of the PSR is significant and justifies, and even requires, a sporting sanction.”
Former Everton striker Kevin Campbell told talkSPORT that players constantly receiving news will not help them in the final stretch of the season.
“When you do the business, you don't expect points to be taken away,” he said.
“So you have to get up again to play again and that will be the hardest part for Sean Dyche.”
Previously, the deduction galvanized the team, but it's no guarantee it will happen now.
