Celta Vigo took the lead Borja Iglesias on loan from Real Betis this summer, after an unproductive but enjoyable loan at Bayer Leverkusen last season. The veteran striker is enjoying life back in his native Galicia, and already there are some thoughts for next summer.
Iglesias has another year left on his deal at Benito Villamarin, but Betis have an option to extend it until 2027 unilaterally. He currently earns 1.7 million euros net per year, which Celta pays this season, but one of the key issues is the rest of his fee (4 million euros) to be paid to Espanyol, as revealed from ED. Betis must also pay 9.7 million euros including his gross salary.
Meanwhile Celtic they hope to get Iglesias in the next season for free, which implies that Betis will agree to give up the money they still owe on a fee. Obviously they save their salary, but the activation of their extension clause would analyze those payments, and Celta's argument this season was that they could not afford more.
The Galician side received €3m in a loan fee from Wolves for Jorgen Strand Larsen, but will receive another €30m for him in all likelihood. While Iglesias does not close the door on a return to Betis, he is also happy with Balaidos, and is open to staying.
Iglesias has been a key part of Celta's new high-powered attack under Claudio Giraldez, scoring four times in just six starts. He will be 32 next year, but Iago Aspas will be 38 by then, and if Anastasios Douvikas performs this season, there will be no guarantees that he will stay. If he continues to hit goals, Betis' demands for El Panda will increase, but Celta also want to keep him.
