'There is definitely room for improvement': Paul Scholes pinpoints area Erik ten Hag must prioritise at Manchester United
Manchester United must address their attacking weaknesses if they are to have any chance of success next season.
That's according to club legend. Paul Scholeswho has urged Erik ten Hag to have at least three top-class centre forwards vying for a starting spot.
He Red Devils They have made one attack-minded signing in the transfer window so far, The signing of Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna in a £36m deal.
They have also secured a highly-rated 18-year-old centre-back. Leny Yoro from Lille.
After a disappointment Premier league season in which they finished in eighth place, Ten HagThe men of 's will look to make serious progress next season.
But Scholes expressed concern that his attacking squad may still not be up to par, something that could prove costly.
“They really need to strengthen that area,” he told talkSPORT. “Look, I don't like going back to when we were playing.”
“But we had three or four centre forwards who were out of this world and we're talking about scoring between 80 and 200 goals between them.
“Rasmus Hojlund came in last year as a young player and was asked to play every week and you have to come in and out. There is not enough strength and depth in that position at the club.
“And they tried to fix that with Zirkzee. I don't know if they'll get one or two more, but I think it's an area of the pitch that United definitely need to improve on.”
Scholes amassed an astonishing 11 Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two Champions League trophies during his career with United.
He played alongside some of the club's most impressive attackers of all time, including Eric Cantona, Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
But despite identifying some major areas for improvement, Scholes was optimistic that things are looking positive for his former club heading into the new season.
“There's definitely stability there, which is good,” he said. “From the outside, from the support staff's point of view, it looks a little bit more stable.”
“Signing two young players who, to be honest, I haven't seen much of, but it seems that the defender (Yoro) has adapted very well.
“He seems like a good player. I haven't seen much of the centre forward (Zirkzee) either.”
“So we'll have to wait and see. Look, it's great that the coach is staying.
“I think what he did in that Cup final probably saved his job, because Manchester United were really good that day and one thing they have to find is a bit of consistency.
“If they can do that, then hopefully they'll have a chance to have a good season and progress to the Champions League.”
