'They will pay for that': Gary Neville tells Mark Clattenburg to resign from Nottingham Forest role after 'mafioso' statement
Gary Neville has told Mark Clattenburg that he is RESIGNING his role as a referee analyst in light of his shocking statement on Sunday.
The Football Association has announced it is investigating a statement published in X by the club attacking the referee during their defeat to Everton as it calls into question the integrity of a referee.
In the statement, Bosque accused PGMOL of deploying Luton Town fan in VAR for their six-point drop at Goodison Park on Sunday, which ended 2-0 against the Toffees.
It said: “Three extremely bad decisions – three sanctions not imposed – that we simply cannot accept.
“We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan before the match but they did not change it. Our patience has been tested several times. The NFFC will now consider its options.”
Forest They had reason to feel aggrieved just before half-time when they were denied a penalty despite the ball hitting Ashley Young's outstretched arm in the Everton area.
Meanwhile, in separate incidents, Young escaped punishment for hitting Gio Reyna inside the Everton box in the first half, as well as colliding with Callum Hudson-Odoi inside the Everton box.
But Neville is furious at the way the two-time European champions have responded to his setbacks, calling them a “scandal”.
The Manchester United legend also believes that former Premier League referee Clattenburg, who was hired as a referee analyst in February, should distance himself from the statement by resigning from the role.
“It's like a statement from a mafia gang, honestly… what the hell are they playing at?” Neville said Sky Sports.
“I think anyone and everyone would have some sympathy for Nottingham Forest for some of the decisions they have made this season, but they have differentiated defeat from victory in the way they have handled them.
“He's like a petulant child, it's embarrassing. Some of the things they say, the inference of cheating because there is an official on the VAR who is a Luton fan, is a scandal and they will pay for that.
“They will regret it as a football club in terms of their history and how they present themselves. “They have done very well over a long period of time, they will regret that statement.
“The last line, 'explore options.' very critical of Liverpool earlier this season, after the game against Tottenham; Clubs should stop saying that. They have to stop saying that.
“Sue? Replay the game? Recover points? What are the options? Your options are that you can complain a little if you want, you can get angry but you have no choice, this is a sports situation… unless you really Let's classify referees and officials as cheaters, which is not the case.
“Get rid of that 'explore all options' thing. Today, Nottingham Forest have seriously let themselves down amid a lot of bad decisions going against them.”
“Mark Clattenburg must resign tonight,” Neville added. “He must resign from his job at Nottingham Forest.
“Because if you see those words coming out that question integrity and essentially call a VAR official a cheater because they support a certain club, then you are supporting what is being said.
“I think he would basically lose all credibility with the referees in the game.
“In my opinion, he should resign tonight and distance himself from that statement.”
