Earlier this week, talkSPORT reported The Bundesliga star has told his club he is ready to take on a new challenge.

A move to Old Trafford would see him reunite with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag, who remains a huge admirer of his former captain.

But Bayern fans have not been impressed with reports of his possible transfer, so much so that they have made a petition to try to stop it.

At the time of writing this article, more than 14,000 people have signed it.

The petition's description reads: “We all want Matthijs de Ligt to stay at FC Bayern Munich! He has proven that he is a world-class defender, probably the best in our team.

“There is a reason why he was voted our player of the 2022/23 season. Plus, he is only 24 years old and has a bright future ahead of him that he will use to develop his enormous potential.

“Despite his young age, Mattha is already very mature and has a great mentality that will definitely make him a standout figure in defence and probably a contender for the captaincy in a few years.

“His ability to speak English, German and Dutch fluently would help him greatly in that regard. At 19, he has already led Ajax Amsterdam to the UCL semi-finals as captain.

The petition is rapidly gaining signatures.

“Selling Matthijs de Ligt would be an absolutely horrible decision and we would regret it without a doubt. That is why we are using our voice to draw attention and say that we will NOT make this mistake.”

The 24-year-old has made 73 appearances for Bayern since joining the club from Juventus for £68m in 2022.
