Youri Tielemans lauded a “really good” afternoon at Villa Park, as Unai Emery’s side returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Manchester City.
A commanding performance saw Aston Villa take a two-goal lead into second-half stoppage time, holding on for all three points after Phil Foden had halved the deficit.
Tielemans, named Player of the Match by TNT Sports, credited a strong team performance, and what he felt was a deserved triumph.
The midfielder said: “We fought together, we defended really well and then, when we had to attack, we did the right things. We made the right passes and the right choices. It was a good performance.
“It’s always difficult [against Man City]. We know that they maybe haven’t won as much as they have done the previous years, but they’re a class side, and it’s a credit to us I think today.
“We showed great character, a good performance and I thought we were really good in the game.”
The Belgian admitted the only frustration from an otherwise enjoyable afternoon was the goal conceded in the 93rd minute.
Despite not being able to hold on for a clean sheet, he felt the defensive performance was a strong one, and discussed a more advanced role for himself, just in front of Amadou Onana and Boubacar Kamara.
Tielemans added: “Apart from the goal we conceded at the end [everything went right].
“It was such an unlucky goal to concede, we just trip over the ball, but I think the performance overall was really good.
“That was the plan, to have them [Onana and Kamara] behind and lock everything up at the back.
“The guys at the back did a really good job today, and for me, going forward, it helped me a lot knowing I had them two behind me.”
