Borussia Dortmund take a 1-0 lead to Paris next week after Niclas Füllkrug secured an important win against Paris Saint-Germain at the Westfalenstadion on Tuesday night.
A collective performance, it’s arguably Dortmund’s best football they’ve played all season. Compact defensively, pro-active in pressing the ball and quick in their transitions, it was a tactical masterclass from Edin Terzic. But they could yet rue missed chances after Füllkrug missed two chances after taking the lead.
With a 1-0 lead at the halfway stage, Dortmund already have one foot in the final but sporting director Sebastian Kehl has urged caution ahead of the second-leg next week.
“The 1-0 is a good starting point for the return match, but we know that things will be very heated next week. To survive in Paris, we need a good performance,” said Kehl.
Mats Hummels commens ‘mature’ performance
Borussia Dortmund’s win against Paris Saint-Germain now guarantees Champions League football for the team in fifth in the Bundesliga. With Die Schwarzgelben fifth with three games remaining, they can no longer be caught by Eintracht Frankfurt.
“We were very grown-up and very mature,” said Hummels.
“We are also happy that we have now qualified for the Champions League. We have covered up a poor Bundesliga season with a strong season in the Champions League
