Tottenham Hotspur went into a negotiation with Real Betis trying to sell a player, and came out with a part of another. Giovani Lo Celso will return to Sevilla on transfer day, but the compensation received from Spurs took a curious form.
Lo Celso was a target for Betis after missing out on Dani Ceballos, and they were desperate to get a deal done with Tottenham Hotspur. However, they did not want to pay a fee, and ended up paying only his salary for a three-year deal with the Argentine international, who has an option for one more year.
Matteo Moretto explained to Football España that instead of a fee, Spurs will have an option to buy USMNT midfielder Johnny Cardoso, who arrived at the club in January for 6 million euros. If they don't want to buy, they still have the chance to make money on the 22-year-old, instead of keeping a percentage of the sales fee.
Cardoso looked impressive early on, and is a defensive midfielder primarily concerned with holding the defense together, and recovering the ball high up the pitch. He is competent on the ball, and possesses a vicious shot – a few months after his arrival, he was already tipped for a big money move this summer.
