The phrase row can be used a little frivolously when referring to the interest some players have in emerging stars, but it seems appropriate for Athletic Club winger Nico Williams. When and if the 21-year-old decides to leave the Basque Country, it seems he will have his choice of suitors.
In the Premier League, Liverpool, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Arsenal are already linked with Williams, and The Telegraph (via AS Diary) say Tottenham Hotspur they are the last side to be placed in the pursuit of him. Spurs are supposedly looking for a winger who can play on the left.
Williams signed a new deal with Athletic until 2026 in November, but his release clause remained at an “affordable” €50m, giving him a chance to leave if he wants. Barcelona has also been in contact with his agents, but it is unlikely to be able to allow his release clause, and with frayed relations after the signing of Barcelona of Inigo Martinez, Los Leones is unlikely to negotiate a favorable agreement. For his part, Williams said recently he has “many years to come” at Athletic, after lifting the Copa del Rey.
