Tottenham lead the race to sign Lecce star Patrick Dorgu
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly leading the race to sign Lecce star Patrick Dorgu, according to the Italian outlet. La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Destiny Udogie has established himself as Ange Postecoglou's starting right-back after joining the club from Udinese and Ben Davies has been the Italian's understudy of late.
But, with the 31-year-old's current contract expiring at the end of this season, it is likely that he will be allowed to leave the club as a free agent at the end of this season.
So, it seems that Spurs have started exploring options in the market to sign a new left-back. He has been reported that Postecoglou's team has identified Dorgu as a serious option and even tried to secure his signing in the summer.
But the Lilywhites ultimately chose not to hire him as Lecce demanded at least 25 million pounds for him and they were not willing to spend that much for him at that time.
Dorgu to Tottenham
Now, the 19-year-old has signed a contract extension with the Italian club that will run until 2029. However, quoting and translating the print version of GDS, sports witness claims that despite the renewal, Tottenham remain interested in signing him and Lecce are willing to cash in on him for a club record fee.
The report says that the auction for the Dane has started as AC Milan are also interested in buying him, while Chelsea are also in this race. But Spurs are currently in pole position to complete the deal along with the blues.
Morten Hjulmand's move to Sporting CP for £18m is currently Lecce's record sale. Considering the Italian team asked around £25m for him last summer, they could now increase their price following Dorgu's impressive start this season.
Dorgu is a versatile player as he can play in the left-back position, but Lecce coach Luca Gotti has been using him on the flanks this season.
The youngster is a highly talented player and it would be a huge coup for Tottenham if they were to acquire him. However, it will be interesting to see if the north London club ultimately opt to take a concrete approach to securing his signature in January or next summer.
