Tottenham star Heung-min Son is not a Premier League legend despite his all-time goalscoring record, claims former Chelsea star
Heung-Min Son continues to make history with Tottenham, but he should not be considered a Premier League legend.
This is according to talkSPORT presenter Andy Townsend, who felt the term was too strong for the Spurs forward.
Son He became the fifth top scorer in Tottenham history by scoring the winning goal in his 2-1 victory over Luton.
It was the South Korean star's 160th goal for the club, coming with four minutes of normal time remaining against the Hatters and boosting Ange Postecoglou's hopes of a top-four finish.
Son's goal lifts him above Tottenham legend Cliff Jones on the club's all-time goalscoring list.
With only his former teammate Harry Kane (280 goals), Jimmy Greaves (266), Bobby Smith (208) and Martin Chivers (174) ahead of him, he is a modern icon in N17.
But it seems this is not good enough to be called a Premier League legend, according to former Chelsea midfielder Townsend.
Asked if winning some medals would help him earn the tag, he told talkSPORT Breakfast: “He (Son) is a great player, he's great – that word 'legend' should only be used in the right context.”
He then joked: “Someone put that in your script about me before and it's not right.”
“I think Son has been a great player and a great operator for Spurs, but a legend? No.”
Son has scored at least 15 goals in three of the last four Premier League campaigns, having scored 21 goals in 2021/22 and 17 in 2020/21.
In fact, the 31-year-old has contributed 12 points to the Spurs this season, with five of his 15 efforts proving to be game-winning goals.
Speaking about his place in the history books with Tottenham, Son said: “I didn't even realize how many goals I had scored.
“Playing for a club for almost 10 years is an incredible feeling and a great honor for me. I want to thank everyone who played with me and coached me for their great efforts.”
Tottenham face West Ham at the London Stadium, looking to secure another victory to maintain their Champions League living hopes.
