Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly “tempting” VfB Stuttgart star Hiroki Ito to join the club this summer, according to the German outlet. Kicker.

It has been suggested that despite signing Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin in the last two transfer Windows, the Lilywhites are looking to add depth in this department after securing European football next season.

Ange Postecoglou likes to deploy a left-footed centre-back on the left side of the defence, but currently only has Van de Ven to do so. So, with two right-footed centre-backs already in place, Spurs are apparently looking to sign a new left-footer to support Van de Ven next season.

According to the report of Kicker, Tottenham are interested in signing Ito and the Lilywhites' interest is “tempting” the Japanese to move to the newly renovated White Hart Lane. The report further claims that the defender has a £26million release clause in his professional contract so that the north London club can secure his signature for an affordable fee.

The German outlet also claims that Stuttgart fears losing its star this summer, so it remains to be seen if Postecoglou's team finally chooses to sign him.

Ito to Tottenham

The 25-year-old joined Stuttgart from Japanese side Jubilo Iwata on an initial loan deal in 2021 before the deal became permanent the following year. Following his move to the MHP Arena, the defender has established himself as a key player for the club in recent years.

Ito enjoyed a promising campaign last season, registering two assists and keeping seven clean sheets in 26 Bundesliga appearances, and also guided his team to secure the title. Champions League football by finishing second ahead of Bayern Munich.

The 25-year-old, who stands 6ft 2ins tall, has centre-back characteristics, but can also play in the left-back position. He is fast, comfortable playing from the back and also efficient in defensive contributions.

Therefore, he could be an excellent signing for Tottenham if they acquire him. However, it will be interesting to see if the north London club ultimately opts to adopt a concrete strategy to sign the Japan international to strengthen their defensive department.
