Troy Deeney: Jack Grealish's legacy is in danger of being ruined – he needs to leave Man City to feel the love again
Jack Grealish may need to leave Manchester City to get back on track – he risks ruining his legacy.
This is the opinion of the former Watford captain Troy Deeneywho believes that the 29-year-old player needs to be in a club where he is the protagonist and feels love again.
Grealish has struggled to get fit in 2024, with Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku They often prefer him up front on the left wing because pep guardiola.
His lack of game time left him out of Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024.
And he has yet to find his rhythm so far this season – he has only started five Premier League games.
With the year 2024 coming to an end, Grealish is incredibly goalless in all competitions City this calendar year.
He has only contributed one top-flight assist in his 11 league games this season before Sunday's clash with his rivals. manchester united.
Ahead of the Manchester derby, Deeney spoke to talkSPORT.com about Grealish, where he stated that the former Villa Aston The star must start thinking about his future.
Deeney recently commented how Mark Rashford so far it has not been up to par its potentialdespite his obvious talent.
Asked if that could be the same case with Grealish, the 36-year-old said: “Oh, that's interesting, I've never really thought about that.
“I think he's in danger of having his legacy ruined.
“And what I mean by that is I don't think you can say he hasn't lived up to his potential, because look at what he did at Villa and he did it over a sustained period of time.
“What's happening now in football is, 'What have you done lately?', and he hasn't done much lately because of injuries and being out of the team.”
Deeney was then pressed on whether Grealish would have to leave the Etihad to rediscover his form, with an emotional return to Villa a potential option.
To which the former Birmingham player remarked: “I don't want him to return to Villa for two reasons, selfishly, because I don't want Villa to get good again, (saying this) with a Blues in front.
“But genuinely for him, I always think that if you come back, there's an expectation that you'll be the person you were when you left.
“I think a fresh start would be great for him and a place where he's the main man again and everyone gives him the ball.
“Because people like Jack need to have the ball every two minutes, and not stay on the side, and when he gets it, run a little and pass it back.
“But I think we will see a new role for him at City, I think we will see him as the number 8, just coming out of midfield.
“I think he can handle that position very well, and that will be good for England also.”
Commenting on who he might join if he decided to leave town, Deeney stated: “SpursHe joins that team in all positions.
“Whether as a winger, number 10 or number 8. Arsenal, no, I don't think he works in Arsenal. Liverpool, does not do it in Liverpool.
“Obviously he won't go to Manchester United, but it's better than what they have.
“Newcastleeasy. There are a lot of teams, anyone outside the top four, I would say they would do well in Chelseabut they have about 75 extremes.
“To be fair, it's probably too cheap for them at £100m, they'd want to spend a bit more money!
“Anyone outside the top four would come in easily and dominate – if he went to Newcastle it would be considered a big step down for him.
“But it's a big club with a big fan base and I think Jack needs to feel that again, to feel like he's loved, to feel like the fan base loves him, but he's also the man who will drive them forward.”
With Grealish tied up at the Etihad until 2027, it remains to be seen whether he will part ways with City before then.
However, with just over 18 months until the 2026 World Cup, Grealish will know that his place in the global tournament is already at risk.
