Troy Deeney names the Premier League club that would be perfect for Lee Carsley

Lee Carsley has a future as a Premier League manager and there is one club in particular who would be a perfect fit.

That's according to the talkSPORT expert and former WatfordEdit captain Troy Deeney.

Carsley will take over your last set of England matches as interim coach when the Three Lions take on Greece on Thursday 14 November and the Republic of Ireland on Sunday 17 November at the League of Nations.

They currently sit second in their standings behind Greece, but need to finish top of the group to gain automatic promotion to League A.

The under-21 coach has recorded three wins and one crucial loss in the tournament so far and will be replaced by the permanent coach. Thomas Tuchel in January.

Carsley will return to his role in the youth team, where he has held his position since 2021.

This occurred after the interim chief dodged rumors linking it with a job in coventry city.

But given his short experience in one of football's most demanding jobs, Deeney opened a discussion with talkSPORT's Jim White and Alex Crook about whether the 50-year-old might be suitable for another job.

When asked by White if Carsley could be thrown into the mix as a possible Premier League manager of the future, Deeney didn't hesitate with his response.

“I think Lee might come in at a different angle is that I don't think his expectation is that he'll get the top four spot right away,” he said.

“Gareth SouthgateIt was as if Man United was where he came in. That was their entry point.

“I think Lee would be fantastic at Brentford, where he worked before.”

Carsley began working on Brentford in October 2014, when he took over the Development Team.

Less than a year later, he was promoted to first-team coach following the departure of Marinus Dijkhuizen and remained in the role until December, when Dean Smith took office permanently.

However, during that time, Carsley won five of his ten games in charge and picked up the Championship Manager of the Month award thanks to a particularly good run.

With Brentford securing promotion to the Premier League in 2021, Deeney suggested they would offer the ideal environment for Carsley to hone his management skills in the top flight.

While Carsley has faced strident criticism especially over the defeat to Greece, the former Watford captain said he had done something admirable by filling the vacant role in the first place.

White asked Deeney if he thought Carsley's behavior in the England role had been “impeccable” and received an enthusiastic response.

“Yes, absolutely,” he said. “Absolutely. I was here (previously with Crook and Sam Matterface), right? And I was the only one who defended him.

“But I think he's tried. He's tried something. He's helped. He could have easily said, no thanks, I'm with the 21. I'm going to stay here where he is.” nice and safe.

“He tried. He raised his profile. He tried some things. And he hasn't spoken out of turn. He hasn't put us in a dubious situation. So I think he's done very well in such a short time.”

But while Deeney was generous in praising Carsley, he was less approving of the behavior of incoming boss Tuchel.

It was revealed that Tuchel had no influence in naming the latest England squad, nor would he be involved in training sessions and the like before taking over in the New Year.

Deeney admitted it was a move that surprised (and a little disappointed) him.

“I would have hoped that he would have at least been at St George's, taken a look at the people, just observed, let people know of his presence, without undermining Carsley in any way,” he said.

“This is your thing. This is what we're doing. But I would also have expected him to say, this is how I'd like to play, so try to implement it. And here's how and why.

“What people don't understand is that there's a lot of time between international breaks for these guys to talk on the phone, have a Zoom, meet in person, whatever.

“This is what I want to do. This is what I'm trying to do. Can you go and do it? And I think saying you won't start until January is a little vague in my opinion.”

He went on to admit, “Maybe he has some family commitments that we don't know about. So I hesitate to question his commitment.”

“But I think I would hope that he would have been trying to get ahead of the curve from the beginning so that we know what we are trying to do. This is what I am looking to do. These are the types of players I want in my squad.

“At least you can have a bird's eye view, see it and anticipate. But it will come in January. The first time you are with these players and looking ahead, it will be for a potentially huge game.”
