- Liverpool U21 Vs. Aston Villa U21 – Sun, Mar 3rd 2024, 14:00
Aston Villa registered an impressive 2-0 victory at Liverpool in Premier League 2 to extend their unbeaten sequence to six matches.
The Young Lions opened the scoring after just five minutes as Omari Kellyman ran through before converting with a coolly-taken finish.
And the visitors made sure of the points courtesy of Kobei Moore’s 76th-minute penalty, substitute Rory Wilson also hitting the woodwork late on, before going on wrap up a hard-fought clean sheet against the Reds.
Villa’s Under-21s have now lost just one of their previous 13 matches in all competitions and have taken 10 PL2 points from a possible 12 since the start of February.
The Villans are next in action on Wednesday as they face Lye Town in the Birmingham Senior Cup quarter-finals.
Kellyman opened the scoring with the first clear-cut opening on Merseyside, making a smart run in behind before latching on to a throughball and slotting a low finish beyond goalkeeper Fabian Mrozek.
James Wright denied Lewis Koumas soon afterwards before a smart double-save from Mrozek to thwart Moore and Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba amid an entertaining start to the encounter.
Travis Patterson was next to test Mrozek with a first-time strike just before the half-hour mark, while Wright was equal to Kaide Gordon’s free-kick as Villa led at the interval.
Kellyman rose highest to meet Todd Alcock’s deep cross shortly after the restart but Mrozek again made a solid save.
And opposite number Wright matched his stop moments later to keep out substitute Kieran Morrison’s volley for the home side.
Villa went close to doubling their advantage just after the hour mark as Moore was denied by a superb point-blank save from Mrozek, who then kept out Kadan Young’s long-range strike.
And the Villans got the second goal they deserved 14 minutes from time as Patterson was fouled by Terence Miles in the penalty area, leaving Moore with the opportunity to send Mrozek the wrong way from the spot.
Sub Wilson then latched on to a ball from Aidan Borland but was denied by a post, before firing narrowly wide when one-on-one with seven minutes remaining, as Villa closed out a superb triumph against the Reds.
