During Spain's Euro 2024 victory celebrations, Alvaro Morata and Rodri Hernandez caused controversy for “claiming” Gibraltar – the pair proclaimed that the small island nation “was Spanish”, despite it being controlled by the United Kingdom.
The Gibraltar Football Association did not take kindly to the actions of Morata and Rodri, and they reported the incident to UEFA. European football's governing body has now decided to open disciplinary proceedings against the Spanish stars, who have been accused of several violations of the rules (via Sport).
Morata and Rodri were accused of the following: violation of the “general principles of conduct”; “violation of basic standards of decent conduct”; “use of sporting events for non-sporting events”; and “discrediting the sport of football, and UEFA in particular”.
If found guilty, a ban is likely to follow. It could mean that Spain are without two of their starters for the start of their UEFA Nations League campaign, which begins in September with matches against Serbia and Switzerland.
