Villarreal midfielder Alex Baena addressed a reported altercation with the Real Madrid star Faith Valverde last season for the first time publicly, and defended his character on the slanderous statements made about him, in his opinion.
During a match between Villarreal and Real Madrid in January 2023, Baena allegedly made comments about Valverde's unborn child while on the pitch, according to multiple outlets in Madrid, at a point when there were concerns about the child health. This did not happen until the following April, when the two met again at the Santiago Bernabeu, when Valverde allegedly punched Baena as the latter headed towards the Villarreal team bus in the parking lot.
Baena appeared the next day with a black eye, and the incident was reported to the police, but it was dropped due to inconsistencies in the evidence. Meanwhile, the Competition Committee decided to suspend Valverde based on the legal decision.
Talk about Chain SERBaena explained that he was caught in the eye of the storm against one of the most powerful institutions in the sport, namely Real Madrid led by president Florentino Perez, and the connections that the two command.
“I didn't speak anymore with Valverde. They were very hard months personally. It affected me in my life, in football and my family. We already know how the press, the club, the boss … That's what that is, it is what I had to suffer, But as I said, it is in the past”.
The 22-year-old categorized those reports about what he told Valverde as a lie.
“A lie was told, they used it for what happened. It hurt me more for my family, who have been harassed on social networks and other places for a long time. (The last time) We have seen in the game and nothing happened, we played like two professionals and the deal was closed.”
Certainly at the moment one word stands against the other, and both are stains of character quite serious if true. Neither has left an impact on their football this season, with Baena leading the assist charts in La Liga, and Valverde perhaps the best midfielder in Spain this season. The former also declared the desire to play in Barcelona, which sees the pair meet in even more tense conditions.
