Vinicius Junior given two-game ban for violent conduct after red card at Valencia, cleared for Super Cup
Vinicius Junior has been given a two-game suspension for violent conduct after he was sent off against Valencia.
Vinicius Jr was shown a straight red card for pushing goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski during the second half of Madrid’s 2-1 La Liga win at Valencia on Friday. The push was initially missed by referee Cesar Soto Grado, who needed to check the pitchside monitor before sending the 24-year-old off.
The Spanish football federation’s disciplinary committee confirmed a two-game suspension on Tuesday evening, plus a €700 fine for Madrid and a further €600 fine for Vinicius Jr. Madrid will appeal the sanction.
It means the Brazil international will miss Madrid’s next two La Liga outings against Las Palmas on January 19 and bottom-of-the-table Valladolid on January 25.
The ban only applies to league fixtures, meaning the forward will be eligible to take part in Thursday’s Supercopa semi-final against Mallorca as well as Sunday’s final, should Madrid qualify. Barcelona play Athletic Club in the other semi-final tie.
Vinicius Jr has been in impressive form this season, scoring 13 goals and providing nine assists in 21 appearances. He played 27 minutes as a second-half substitute in Madrid’s 5-0 win over Deportiva Minera in the last 32 of the Copa del Rey on Monday evening.
