Wayne Rooney says his former England teammate John Terry was the toughest opponent he faced during his career.
He manchester united and the England legend has recently taken his next step in management, being announced as new Plymouth Argyle boss weekend.
Despite having had uneven time on the bench so far, rooneyHis reputation as one of the best English players lives on.
He terrorized defenders in his impressive playing career, which included England caps, Premier League titles and Champions League crowns, while the best stoppers tried to prevent him from scoring goals.
Not many did, but some made it difficult, as he explained to his former Manchester United and England teammate. Gary Neville in the last episode of The overlap.
“I would probably say John Terry (it was the most difficult). You always thought you could outpace him, but he put himself in good positions and was always physical and strong.
“So yeah, I think John Terry was the hardest.”
As well as representing England together, Terry and Rooney faced each other on numerous occasions in the Premier League and cup competitions.
Terry, considered one of the best centre-backs in England's history, played 717 games with Chelsea and earned legendary status by helping the Blues win the Champions League in 2012 and five Premier League titles, among other accolades.
Rooney clearly knew how talented Terry was, and admitted that he used 'maximum length' studs against him when Man United needed to win to avoid lifting a second consecutive title in 2006.
Terry left Stamford Bridge that day on crutches, but has since laughed at Rooney's admission of his intention to injure him.
The former Chelsea captain is not the only defender Rooney still has nightmares about.
AC Milan legends Alessandro Nesta and Paolo Maldini also made sure he worked hard for 90 minutes to try and find the back of the net.
“I always remember playing against AC Milan in the Champions League semi-final,” he said. TNT Sports in March. “Obviously we played the final, but that was the first semi-final.
“I remember when we beat them 3-2 (at Old Trafford in 2007), and after 10 minutes, I could hear them breathing and I remember thinking: 'we've got them.'
“And then when we went to San Siro, they were like Rolls Royce. I don't know how they did it.”
Milan won 3-0 on their own turf to advance to the final and win it all by beating Liverpool.
However, Rooney and United reached the final the following year and beat Terry's Chelsea on penalties.
