Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has admitted that Steven Gerrard outperforms Paul Scholes, especially in one area.
The Premier League debate over who was better Frank Lampard, Scholes and Gerardo has continued since the three played two decades ago.
Most Liverpool Fans would say Gerrard, while most United fans would say Scholes.
So Rooney, the Red Devils' all-time leading scorer and Everton legend, considering Gerrard to be the best might not sit well with his fan base.
He new Plymouth Argyle boss He admitted that Gerrard was the better all-rounder and that Scholes could not be the same figure at Liverpool if he were at Anfield.
Speaking of the last episode of The overlappresented by Sky Bet, Rooney gave a detailed explanation of his view, insisting that Scholes surpassed Gerrard.
He said: “Skill-wise, (the best player I've played with is) Cristiano Ronaldo. But Scholsey also with what he contributed to the team, but certainly from the point of view of ability, Cristiano would say.
“Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are all different.
“As a versatile player, Stevie is the best; he can defend, pass the ball, run, make tackles, score goals and set pieces. As a versatile player, he is the best from that point of view.
“From a scoring point of view, Lamps (Frank Lampard) was the best.
“The goals he scored were incredible from midfield and technically he wasn't on the level of Stevie or Scholesy, but there was no one better at scoring goals from midfield.
“Scholesy, the way he adapted (made it incredible). He was a striker when he was younger, so to move to a ten, then to midfield and then to a deeper midfielder dictating the game, I don't think any of the others two (Gerrard or Lampard) could dictate a game as he could.
“They were all world-class players. Stevie could become manchester united and be a top-level player and do what Scholes could do. But I don't think Scholes could do what Stevie did at Liverpool.”
While fans may argue who is the best, Rooney is in a good position to make a decision having played with all three for England.
At United, he was a teammate of Scholes for many years, where the two won five Premier League titles together.
Rooney also saw Gerrard and Lampard play together for England, where he would become the country's all-time leading scorer, although the midfield duo would prove problematic together.
