“We have a list in mind” – Germany ready for penalties ahead of Spain showdown

Kai Havertz has a 100 percent conversion rate from the penalty spot at Euro 2024 and ahead of Germany’s quarter-final clash against Spain in Stuttgart on Friday evening, penalties is an outcome that Julian Nagelsmann has thought about.

“We have a list in mind,” said Nagelsmann in Thursday’s press conference. “It’s important that the players are still on the pitch by then. It’s important that the players have the confidence to take then. We have many of them. So I have no doubt that we will find the right ones, should it come to that.”

İlkay Gündoğan, Germany’s designated penalty taker, didn’t take Germany’s penalty in their opening 5-1 win against Scotland as he was the player fouled, which allowed Havertz to take only his second ever penalty for the national team. The Arsenal hitman also scored from the spot in Die Mannschaft’s 2-0 win against Denmark, and would be certain to take one in a shootout, should he be on the pitch.

Who else could take a penalty for Germany?

Gündoğan and Toni Kroos will no doubt step up to the task, while Niclas Füllkrug has scored his four penalties for Borussia Dortmund this season. Florian Wirtz also scored from the spot for Bayer Leverkusen last season.
