'We were a disaster': Bruno Guimaraes says Newcastle have no excuse for a 'very disappointing' season in brutally honest interview
A “very disappointed” Bruno Guimaraes claimed Newcastle were a “disaster” when they lost 4-2 to Brentford.
The match started explosively, as both teams scored two goals in the first 32 minutes.
BrentfordThe second goal was undoubtedly from a Newcastle perspective, when Harvey Barnes carelessly passed the ball straight to Yoanne Wissa, who gleefully drove towards the Magpies' backline before firing past Nick Pope.
Barnes atoned for his mistake by scoring the equaliser, but Newcastle could not match Brentford in the second half as goals from Nathan Collins and Kevin Schade secured the three points.
Collins' goal came from a free kick taken forward by Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken, while Sandro Tonali's gentle turnover led to Schade's goal, underlining the ease with which the Magpies conceded goals.
The defeat was Newcastle's fifth of the season and extended their winless streak to a fourth game, leaving them 12th in the standings.
It also continued the Magpies' poor form away from home this season, having won away just twice.
Speaking to Newcastle's internal media team after the match, Guimaraes spoke of his frustrations at the defeat. Eddie HoweThe German team moved further and further away from the European positions.
“In the first half we had some good moments.” Guimaraes said.
“But in the second (half) we became a disaster. After the third goal, we lost our way, we lost control. We became a disaster on the field. Very disappointed.”
What is worrying for Newcastle is that the four goals conceded against Brentford amounted to seven goals conceded in two games following the club's defeat. pulsating 3-3 tie against Liverpool On Wednesday.
Played in front of a noisy St. James' Park, Newcastle looked to have taken a step forward with an impressive performance against the league leaders.
But the Bees brought out the worst in Howe's team, raising serious questions about a defense that just two seasons ago conceded just 33 league goals all season, eight more than they have had this season after 15 games.
However, Guimaraes does not believe that it is a problem isolated only to the rear.
“We have conceded a lot this season,” Guimaraes said.
“We have the Champions League and we didn't concede as much.
“This is not just a defense problem. It is a midfield problem, an attack problem. It is a team problem.
“We have to stop this. But our season, to be honest, has been very, very disappointing.”
Howe also pulled no punches in his assessment of his team's performance, lamenting the series of individual errors that ultimately proved costly.
“That's the frustration, because before that we were tight at the back, the problems were at the other end of the field,” Howe said.
“Now we have scored five in two games and we looked like a very good attacking team, some of our attacking work was really strong today.
“Look, then we go and concede seven in two games out of nowhere. It's difficult to solve because structurally we have been good, but today there were a lot of individual errors.”
“We have work to do in many different areas. There is a very good team there, I have no doubt, but we have not shown it consistently enough, we have not delivered it enough for my liking.
“A period of reflection and a period of work, then we will try to fight back.”
Howe and his Newcastle team hope to have found a solution to their defensive problems in time for their next match on December 14 when they host. city of leicester.
