West Ham to steal Mats Hummels away from Brighton

According to Florian Plettenberg, West Ham United are the latest club to state their interest in signing Mats Hummels.

It had previously been reported that Bologna were leading the race to sign the former German international after RCD Mallorca pulled out of the race to sign Hummels.

However, due to the 35-year-old deciding to take his time before committing to Bologna, the Italian side have withdrawn the contract initially proposed.

This had left the door open for Brighton & Hove Albion to lure Hummels to the Premier League.

It is understood that the Seagulls’ new head coach, Fabian Hürzeler, has already been in contact with the former Borussia Dortmund defender, talking about the project set out at Brighton as well as Hummels’ ambitions.

Nevertheless, West Ham could be set to steal the German away from the Sussex south coast.

The Hammers are looking to add experience to their backline, and the 35-year-old is on their shortlist, meaning they could make an attempt to prevent a deal from happening with Brighton.

Regardless, Hummels is also considering the option of retiring, but the former Bayern Munich centre-back has yet to make his final decision.
