What can England expect from Thomas Tuchel?

With Thomas Tuchel set to become the new England head coach, GGFN looks at what the former Borussia Dortmund, PSG, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich man can bring to the table.

Tuchel will be very familiar with the vast majority of the current England squad. During his time at Chelsea, the 51 year old would have coached and played against most English internationals. Additionally, Tuchel helped lure England captain Harry Kane to Germany in the summer of 2023.

Having reached the last two European Champions Finals, England have never been able to quite get over the line. With the World Cup in 2026 in mind, what can England fans expect from Tuchel’s England.

A Tournament Winner

Tuchel is a winner – something England are not right now. Most famously in England, Tuchel won the Champions League with a fairly average Chelsea team that got the better of Pep’s Manchester City in 2021.

Tuchel is a tactically-oriented manager who can also adapt during the game to get the most out of his players.

This should be music to the ears of all England fans. Former manager Gareth Southgate was heavily criticised for being the exact opposite during big games.

Alongside his Champions League medal, Tuchel dominated in France with PSG, won the Bundesliga with Bayern, and the DFB Pokal with BVB.

For a manager who has won more tournaments than domestic leagues, Tuchel seems like the ideal fit for an international role.

Tuchel’s England career will officially begin on January 1st 2025 with his contract running out after the World Cup in 2026.

Though this seems like a short contract, this is not new for Tuchel. He likes short contracts and evaluating where he stands rather than tying himself down for four-to-five years.

Though this can rub people the wrong way in club football, it perhaps makes more sense for international management.

Tuchel’s goal now is to get England to the World Cup and win it.
