Why Arne Slot is banned from Carabao Cup quarter-finals at Southampton as Liverpool give coach loophole
Liverpool manager Arne Slot will serve a touchline ban in the Carabao Cup this week after benefiting from a unique coaching loophole.
The Dutchman will be in the stands for the Reds' quarter-final match without a coach Southamptonlive on talkSPORT, due to the suspension.
Slot saw his third yellow card during Liverpool2-2 draw with Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday.
That is the threshold for an automatic suspension for top coaches, and players will be allowed two more warnings before being punished.
Crystal Palace Defender Daniel Muñoz was among those who reached that mark, but unlike Slot, he is available for Carabao Cup duty.
Why is Slot against Southampton banned?
The 46-year-old will serve his one-match touchline suspension in the Carabao Cup due to a single decision outlining coaching suspensions.
According to FA guidelines, Player red cards apply in all domestic competitions. and will be served instantly in the next available match.
Bans for accumulation of yellow cards are limited to the Premier League, so Muñoz can play in the Carabao Cup match against Arsenal but not the main fight match a few days later.
However, this does not apply to managers, where suspensions apply to different FA competitions, regardless of the type of ban.
A similar scenario has already played out this season, ironically with Liverpool's rivals Southampton and their now former manager Russell Martin.
He Recently fired Saints boss he missed his victory Stoke City in the round of 16 after receiving his third booking in the Premier League.
Andy Robertson He will also miss Liverpool's trip to St Mary's after being sent off against Fulham, but may return this weekend.
In Slot's absence, his assistant Sipke Hulshoff will likely be the man to take charge, with both of them liaising by phone with the bench.
The first was booked in the 57th minute of the 2-2 draw against Fulham after reacting to Curtis Jones' being cautioned for an ill-timed challenge on Alex Iwobi.
“There were some moments where I could have gotten a yellow card,” said Slot, who also saw a yellow card against Chelsea and Arsenal.
“It's an emotional game and we were a man down, it's frustrating. It's good to see our performance after so many setbacks.
“It's hard for me to judge because I only see it in real time as the referee.
“We have to accept what the VAR sees. You know how important these decisions can be. We ended up with a draw and I don't think we can blame the referee for that.”
