Why Matheus Cunha's sanction and fine against Wolves was reduced after the altercation in Ipswich

Matheus Cunha avoided an increased suspension and fine by offering to buy new glasses for an Ipswich Town staff member.

The Football Association (FA) accused him of misconduct and handed him a two-match banas well as a fine of £80,000.

However, according to his written reasons, it was agreed that Cunha had accepted the position and offered a prompt and sincere apology.

The 25-year-old also offered to pay for new glasses, with his clean disciplinary record being another mitigating factor in the reductions.

Cunha claimed in his statement that he felt “quite threatened” during the fight which involved a “large number” of Ipswich staff.

Despite this, the FA say the commission saw no “provocation” by Ipswich staff that would have caused their behaviour.

They also believe that there was no justification for Cunha to grab the employee's glasses, an action he says he regrets.

The Wolves argued that the sanction should be no more than a one-game suspension, but the commission disagreed.

Cunha was first suspended on December 17, but served the first game of his suspension on Monday, in which Wolves lost 3-0 to Nottingham Forest.

He will also not be available for the FA Cup third round clash at Bristol City on Saturday, live on talkSPORT 2.

However, Cunha will be able to return to Wolves next Wednesday when they face Newcastle in the Premier League at St James' Park.

The Brazilian is his club's top scorer this season with ten goals in 20 games in all competitions.

talkSPORT reported last week that Cunha is ready to sign a new long term contract at Wolves amid links with Manchester United and Arsenal.
