Sky Germany reports that Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is Bayern Munich’s top candidate to replace Thomas Tuchel who is to depart at the end of the season.
Bayern Munich announced earlier today that they will part ways with Tuchel at the end of the season. The club will now look for a replacement for the former Chelsea and PSG manager with Alonso allegedly their favoured candidate.
Other managers have been linked to the role in the past few weeks with Zinedine Zidane and Hansi Flick both linked to the role. Whilst other high-profile managers such as Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho are available.
The issue for Bayern is that courting Alonso will not be easy due to Leverkusen yet to wrap up the title and interest from Liverpool who are also looking for a new manager. This means that for the first time in a while, a move to Bayern may not be the smart option.
In recent years, Bayern have been ruthless with their managers, for example, Julian Nagelsmann was meant to be a long-term hire. This means that the Bayern job will come around a lot more compared to a job like Liverpool. If Leverkusen also end the season with the title and DFB-Pokal there will be little left for Alonso to achieve in the Bundesliga, especially with Bayern.
It is also possible that Alonso feels he has unfinished business at Leverkusen and decides to stay at Die Werkself for another season.
