'You may feel aggrieved': Darren Bent names Premier League star who should have been in England squad
A Premier League striker who has not played for England since 2018 may feel “offended” at being left out of Lee Carsley's latest Three Lions squad.
Carsley He will take charge of England for the final time as caretaker manager against Greece and Ireland on November 14 and 17 respectively, ahead of Thomas Tuchel. takes charge on January 1st.
Lewis Hall and Taylor Harwood-Bellis were called for the first time as Curtis Jones receives another opportunity to make his senior international debut.
Carsley opted not to make any changes to his attacking options as Noni Madueke, Jack Grealish, Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Ollie Watkins and Dominic Solanke retained their places.
But the English international with 13 caps Darren Bent believes there should have been an opportunity for an established Premier League striker who has been “incredible” this season.
When asked by talkSPORT co-host Jason Cundy Bent, who felt he was unlucky to miss out on an England call-up, named Ipswich left-back Leif Davis before adding: “There is one who is in great form but I can understand why he is not in the team.
“But if you choose players on their merits, Danny Welbeck“He has been incredible for Brighton this season.”
Bent's claim left Cundy shaking his head, but the former Tottenham and Sunderland striker doubled down.
“I know what you're saying, because do you think in two years he'll be there (at the 2026 World Cup)? And most likely he won't, so I can understand why they left him out,” Bent said. .
“But if Welbeck is now sitting at home and had aspirations of being called up for England, he may feel aggrieved.
“He's playing as well as anyone in that center forward role.”
Welbeck is loving life under Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler and has scored six Premier League goals in ten appearances.
The 33-year-old's record this season puts him on track to score his most top-flight goals in a season since 2013/14.
During that campaign, Welbeck scored nine goals in 25 games for Manchester United.
Since then, Welbeck have never scored more than six goals in a Premier League season.
Welbeck also has two assists, making him Brighton's top provider alongside Kaoru Mitoma and summer signing Georgino Rutter.
Had Welbeck been called up by England, he could have been in line for his first appearance for the Three Lions since September 2018, when he started in a 1-0 win over Switzerland.
Hurzeler, who replaced Roberto De Zerbi in June, praised Welbeck's impact on and off the field after his goal helped the Seagulls beat Newcastle 1-0 in October.
“If he continues to behave the way he does, he'll be able to play for a long time,” Hurzeler said.
“We have another player (James Milner) who is almost 40 years old and he is still there and tries to be the best every day. That's the same for Danny.
“I knew he had great talent and that he is a great teammate and that he supports me a lot. Not only is he a great footballer, but also a great teammate and a great personality.
“He has a sensitivity to team dynamics and tries to connect the players. That's very important to me.”
Welbeck will have the chance to score his most Premier League goals in 11 years when Brighton host Manchester City at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.
