Aston Villa Under-21s booked their place in the knockout stages of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy on Tuesday evening, despite falling to a 3-0 defeat at Barrow.

Josep Gombau’s youthful side, made up largely of under-18s, fought valiantly against the full-strength League Two outfit, who took all three points in Northern Group D courtesy of goals from Dom Telford, Theo Vassell and Andy Dallas.

The Young Lions advanced to the round of 32 in second place – becoming the only ‘invited’ under-21s side in both the northern and southern sections of the draw to do so – after Bolton’s win over Fleetwood in the group’s other game.

Villa had already amassed five points in Northern Group D, with a 3-2 win at Fleetwood Town on matchday one, and a penalty-shoot triumph at Bolton Wanderers in their second game.
