Liverpool They have reportedly registered their interest in signing Southampton star Alex McCarthy this summer, according to the daily mail.
The Reds went for the title this season, but ran out of gas at the business end and now it's sealed. Jurgen Klopp will have to settle for third place in the first division in his last season as coach of the Merseyside club. Liverpool have won the Carabao Cup this season and the Reds will have to be content with just that accolade in Klopp's final campaign.
With this season about to conclude, Liverpool have apparently already begun planning their transfer companies to give their new director, who will probably be Arne Slot, enough resources to achieve success in the next campaign.
According to the report of daily mailLiverpool could look to sign a new goalkeeper as a back-up option for Alisson as Caoimhim Kelleher looks to leave the club to play regularly elsewhere.
The report further claims that the Merseyside club have identified McCarthy as a serious target and could opt to take a concrete approach at the end of this season.
McCarthy to Liverpool
He daily mail claims the Southampton star has entered the final weeks of his current contract, meaning he will be available as a free agent this summer.
However, it has been reported that signing McCarthy will not be easy for Liverpool, as Newcastle UnitedEdit and Celtic are also planning a bet on him to strengthen their goalkeeping department.
The 34-year-old, who stands 6ft 4ins tall, is a very experienced goalkeeper and is comfortable with the ball at his feet. He also has experience playing in the Premier League, so he could be a solid signing for Liverpool to support Alisson if they sign him.
However, it will be interesting to see if the Anfield club ultimately opt to take a concrete approach to signing McCarthy in the next transfer window if Kelleher leaves the club.
Meanwhile, Liverpool take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the final game of this season at Anfield on Sunday afternoon and Klopp will hope to end his tenure at the club with a win in this fixture.
