After a long recruitment process, Slot was given the position thanks to the excellent work being done at Feyenoord.

After taking over the club in December 2021, Slot guided the Dutch team to the Eredivisie title in 2023, before winning the Dutch Cup last season.

He also led the club to the Europa League final in his first season and the 45-year-old has earned a reputation for achieving success while playing high-octane, attack-minded football.

Van Gaal, who managed Manchester United between 2014 and 2016, knows what the Premier League is and gave his support to his Dutch compatriot.

speaking to sky sportsVan Gaal said: “Yes, it's a great job because Jurgen Klopp has done it fantastically.

“So he (Slot) is the successor and it is always more difficult, but he is a good technical coach.

“I think at the moment he is the best technical coach in Holland. At that time he was free, so I think Liverpool have made a very good choice.”

Slot officially took charge of the Reds on June 1 and will step under the table before beginning his first campaign at the club in August.

Van Gaal replaced David Moyes as Red Devils boss in the summer of 2014, having guided the Netherlands to a third-place finish at the World Cup in Brazil.

His two-year spell at Old Trafford had some turbulence and many questions about his future at the club overshadowed his second season at the club.

However, in his last game in charge of Man United they beat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final.
