Bo Svensson has agreed to become Union Berlin’s new Head Coach, according to Sky Sports DE.

The official announcement is expected in the next few days.

Union Berlin entered into formal discussions with the former Mainz 05 Head Coach after securing their Bundesliga status last weekend with a dramatic late win against Freiburg.

Union Berlin have moved quickly amid interest from across Europe for the in-demand Coach.

Svensson began his coaching career in Austria, with second division side, FC Liefering.

After a successful spell, Svensson became the new head coach of his former club Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga in 2021.

Svensson led a remarkable turnaround.

He lifted his side away from Bundesliga relegation in his first season and competed for the Europa Conference League qualification in his second, ultimately finishing 8th.

However, after a sharp fall from grace with nine games without a win at the start of his third season, Svensson stepped down by mutual consent in November 2023.

His new role at Union will be his first since departing Mainz 05.

Svensson takes over from interim coach, Marco Grote who took over from former Head Coach, Nenad Bjelica for the end of the season.

Bjelica was dismissed after Union went seven games without a win and fell into the relegation zone.

Marco Grote will return to his under 19 role.

Svensson will be expected to lift Union back to the heights of Europe, where only a year ago they were looking forward to their first Champions League appearance.

Their inaugural campaign ended at the group stages but Union will be hoping Svensson can create more memories in Köpenick.
